The Philippine Peasant Farmer Movement is coming to Edmonton!
Danilo “Ka Daning” Ramos is a veteran peasant farmer leader and one of the most respected voices of the Filipino Farmer’s Movement. He currently stands as the National Chairperson of Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP), advancing the rights and struggles of millions of peasants, farm workers, youth, women, and Indigenous peoples across the Philippines.
Ka Daning’s tour comes amid intensified militarization and human rights abuses against peasant farmers and Indigenous communities at the hands of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and backed by foreign US forces, with continued land dispossession, displacement, kidnappings, and bombings.
The recent Canada-Philippine Status of Visiting Forces Agreement (SOVFA) will see Canadian troops on the ground in the Philippines backing the AFP. This will result in continued violence against farmers, repression of resistance to destructive Canadian mining operations, and escalation for war with China through the Indo-Pacific Strategy (IPT) and the upcoming Balikatan War Games.
Philippine Edmonton Solidarity Organization (PESO), Anakbayan Edmonton, and Migrante Alberta, call on our allies to build international solidarity with the Filipino Peasants Movement, and to come out and learn from Ka Daning on the struggles for land reform, rural development, people’s rights, and national liberation.
United Church people: The International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines is a sponsor of brother Danilo’s visit, and they are a longtime United Church partner here in Canada. We are also close companions of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines, and together the people of the United Church have long been involved in challenging Canadian complicity in human rights violations throughout the archipelago. Canadian mining companies have had serious impacts in the Philippines, in part because they are often protected by the Filipino military. This new military agreement is a serious concern. We are invited to learn in community.
