Provincial Archives Of Alberta

The processed holdings of the United Church Archives in Alberta are accessible through the Sandra Thomson Reading Room at the Provincial Archives of Alberta. There is no fee to access the holdings of the Conference Archives, however copying and photo reproduction charges apply.

The PAA Reference Staff may assist researchers with United Church reference requests during regular business hours. They will do a preliminary search of relevant material free of charge, but they have set fees for research services for anyone who is unable to come in person to do their own research, or for extensive research beyond the preliminary search.

In keeping with The United Church of Canada Privacy Policy, access to church registers is closed for certain periods of time to respect the privacy of all the people named within. The timing rules are as follows:

  • Baptism records: closed for 100 years
  • Marriage records: closed for 100 years
  • Burial records: closed for 20 years

However, any person named in a United Church baptism, marriage, or burial register is entitled to receive a copy of his or her own record. The copy is provided by verbatim transcript, certified as a true copy of the original entry, and is ordered through the Provincial Archives of Alberta (PAA) Reference Desk and Archives Service Centre. PAA fees may apply. See the full price list.
