October 19 some Albertans will be eligible to vote on ten referendum questions. The question focused on starting a process for separating from Canada is getting the most attention, but the other nine questions have the potential for very negative impacts should they pass, and are already creating both uncertainty and a climate of fear and exclusion no matter their outcome.
As people of faith we hold the responsibility to centre our neighbours. Those who can vote also have the responsibility to do so. The division and fears we face are difficult, but our Creed and our faith remind us we are not alone, and that Jesus reconciles and makes new. In that spirit, Northern Spirit Regional Council urges your thoughtful and faithful engagement with the referendum process. The Region has taken a position against the original nine questions, and in favour of staying in Canada, calling us to focus on the common good. Northern Spirit cannot speak for you or your community of faith, but it does have the responsibility to speak and act according to United Church policies, theologies, and understanding of scriptures. No matter your perspective, please take the time to learn and engage respectfully in community, including after the referendum itself is done.
Updates and resources will be shared in the newsfeed below, and the Regional Council will continue to offer resources and learning spaces.
Resources created by the Referendum Task Group and recommended by partner organizations and faith communities are summarized here, and available for download:
