Nominations deadline – October 11, 2024
In 2025 we’ll celebrate the United Church’s 100th birthday, and see a return to an in-person General Council in Calgary. It’s going to be a big and busy year. Important preparation for the 45th meeting of the General Council will include the election of General Council Commissioners, who serve a three-year term, attend the in-person meeting in Calgary in August, and attend multiple online meetings through those three years as part of the overall governance of our church.
The 45th General Council will be held at the Telus Centre in Calgary from August 7-12, 2025. In this post, you will find more information, an informational video, and the self-nomination. The selection process for Northern Spirit Commissioners is happening as part of the Northern Spirit regional meeting session, held online on October 24. The closing date to submit names for consideration is Friday, October 11.
Here is the description of a Commissioner’s role. Please share it freely. And have a look at this video from Moderator Rt Rev Carmen Lansdowne about commissioners’ roles. Being a Commissioner is a significant commitment of both time and energy. For most people, this commitment is also enriching and faith-deepening. We encourage you to give volunteering for this important role your careful thought and discernment. What perspective and voice might you bring to the discussions and to others’ discernment?
Here is the form needed to nominate yourself; if you would like to nominate someone else, please contact them directly first, then work out whether they feel comfortable using the form. If not, please contact the office. We would be happy to connect you with someone to help you discern and to answer any questions you may have. You can reach the office at northernspirit@united-church.ca, or at 1-800-268-3781, extension 6029.
Again, we encourage Northern Spirit members to consider applying and to look around and encourage others to carefully consider this opportunity. A balance of lay and ordered leaders, plus diversity in all its forms will be factors in the selection process for the commissioners. Commissioners must be members of the United Church of Canada.
