SUMMARY:Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner
DESCRIPTION:In preparation for the season of Lent\, you are invited to engage in an age-old tradition of having a pancake dinner. The word shrove is derived from shrive\, referring to the practice of confession of sins as a preparation for the lent. Lent is also the season when people used to fast. These days during Lent we are invited to discern what it is we need to fast on – such as chocolate\, and indulgences in shopping. Please consider starting the season off by coming to the church for pancakes and fun! \nOn February 17th\, doors open at 5 PM and we will finish serving pancakes at 7PM. It will be a freewill offering. \nEveryone is welcome\, bring your family and friends.

SUMMARY:PIE day at RWUC
DESCRIPTION:Robertson Wesley United Church’s affirming ministry is hosting a free community event for the evening of March 14th\, 2025\, Pi day\, or National Affirming Day; focusing on “P.I.E.” with the theme “sing out proud”. The aim of the event is to celebrate the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and Publicly\, Intentionally\, Explicitly (PIE) emphasize the work of Robertson-Wesley United Church and pride organizations across Edmonton\, who not only support\, but integrate and raise up the queer community in our midst. \nWith the Alberta Legislature recently putting through several anti-trans related bills\, the support of trans and non-binary individuals and vocal opposition to this sort of political rhetoric is essential. For that reason\, whatever donations are received for this event will be split 50/50 between Robertson Wesley’s affirming work and Egale Canada’s efforts towards the litigation against these bills. Egale Canada is working with several families and Skipping Stone\, suing the AB government for unconstitutional discrimination\, particularly for Bill 26\, which was just put into law on Dec 5\, 2024. \nThe event itself is free (donations happily accepted) and will feature delicious pie\, community networking\, socializing\, empowering words and a variety show of local performers. Come and be welcome!

SUMMARY:UNRAVELLING RELIGIOUS TRAUMA
DESCRIPTION:November 16\, 1:00 – 2:30 pm in the Sanctuary. We can all agree that having a religious tradition has many upsides: being a part of a community\, having a belief in something bigger than yourself\, participating in meaningful traditions\, and having a set of values all serve to give life meaning. But when a person\, a community\, or a set of doctrine associated with that religion causes harm\, the harm cuts deeply into our sense of ourselves\, our sense of belonging in the world\, and even our place in eternity. This is a topic that every person of faith should be informed about. Come join Psychologist Amy Nydam and Provisional Psychologist Paige Cahill for a workshop that will cover the basics of what Religious Trauma is and how it shows up individually\, interpersonally\, communally\, and existentially. Whether you have experiences of Religious Trauma personally\, know someone who has\, or just want to learn more so that you can support those around you\, you are welcome. If you have any questions about this workshop\, please contact Rev. Karen Bridges at karen.bridges@rwuc.org
