SUMMARY:Flourishing Workshops with the Moderator
DESCRIPTION:All in Northern Spirit Regional Council are invited to a day with the Moderator. You’re invited to create a team from your ministry whether in person or online.   \nSpend a day with the Moderator\, engaging in reflection and energizing activities toward dream-oriented actions for our churches and communities. Saturday\, May 3\, 2025\, 9:00 am to 4:30 pm (Mountain Daylight time). \nIn person: Southminster-Steinhauer United Church\, 10740 19 Ave. NW Edmonton\, AB   T6J 6W9 \nREGISTER HERE \nClick here for a poster. \nClick here for a bulletin announcement. \n \nWhat is Flourishing?\nAll around the world – from universities to the United Nations\, from corporations to community organizations – people are talking about flourishing. Rooted in belonging\, flourishing means living with purpose and joy and bringing bold collaborative solutions to our world’s challenges. \nThe Moderator\, the Rev. Dr. Carmen Lansdowne\, wants to bring that conversation to The United Church of Canada. She invites us to connect in hope\, with a deep conviction by a belief that\, despite all the challenges of church life in this day and age\, we can move from despair to transformation – from languishing to flourishing. \nIs your church flourishing? (Perhaps that’s the wrong question.) \nIs your church contributing to the flourishing of your community? \nHow might we truly be a flourishing church in the world? How might we live in deep spirituality\, bold discipleship\, and daring justice\, linked from coast to coast to coast in ministry that transforms us and the world around us? \n  \n

SUMMARY:Learning gathering on unmarked burials
DESCRIPTION:Our Sacred Responsibilities: learning from the Unmarked Burials report and challenging settler denial. \nAll people of all backgrounds welcome to this day-long learning gathering\, open to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. We will focus somewhat on the United Church’s responsibilities\, but all backgrounds are welcome as a full part of the day\, and we will not focus only on the United Church. \nTogether we will learn about the recent report on unmarked burials; explore what reparations means; learn about the problem of settler denialism; and practice together how to challenge it. Speakers and knowledge keepers will help us\, and all who come are full participants in helping each other and our communities create a good path forward. \nCommunity\, prayer\, ceremony\, and cultural supports will be part of our day. A separate support space is also available to First Nations\, Métis and Inuit\, respecting that this is a hard topic. \nPractical details\nPlease click here to register. Registration is free but required\, so we can plan for meals.  \nThe full reports from the Office of the Special Interlocutor on Unmarked Burials are available here. (They’re long\, which is one of the reasons we’re offering this learning space.) \nClick here for a PDF poster to share with your community. You can also use the image at the top of this page. \nResource people: elder Wilson Bearhead (invited); elder Dennis Paul;  knowledge keepers Rev John Snow and Rev Tony Snow; Sara Stratton\, Reconciliation and Justice Animator at the General Council of the United Church. \nPlan for our day: 9:30 gathering and coffee; program begins at 10:00AM; we will finish no later than 4:00PM. Our day will include (among other things): prayer and ceremony; an overview of key parts of the report on unmarked burials; reflection from a survivor; what do we and the report mean by “reparations”; what is settler denial\, and how can we challenge it? \nOur space: The building is fully accessible\, and we will be using mics to assist those with hearing needs. We will be in a space where Christian symbols are minimal\, and where smudging and medicines will be part of our day. There is parking on site\, and transit a block away. Lunch and snacks included. \nTravel costs for First Nations\, Métis\, and Inuk participants will be covered. \nOrganized by Indigenous Ministries and Justice of the United Church; Northern Spirit Regional Council: The United Church of Canada; and the Edmonton Cluster of the Being Good Relations Network. Thank you to Spiritual Seekers United in Community/ Southminster-Steinhauer United Church for hosting.

SUMMARY:Breaking the Gender Binary One Word at a Time
DESCRIPTION:Conversations about gender diversity and the power of language\, 6:00PM in AB and SK\, 7:00PM in MB and NW ON. \nWhat is gender inclusive language and how does it have the power to embrace or exclude non-binary\, Two Spirit\, trans\, agender\, and gender queer people? Join us for a practical discussion about evolving language and personal perspectives on its importance. All welcome.\nThe Zoom link is here. Need to phone in? 1-855 703 8985 (Canada Toll-free) and enter meeting ID\n940 3191 7505\nPassword: 492676 \nThis gathering is especially recommended for Regional Council delegates who will be voting on Remit 1 this fall. In the fall of 2020\, delegates to the regional annual meeting will be voting on a remit to make a small but important change to the Basis of Union. Current wording about eligibility for ministry uses “men and women”\, and the wording would be changed to “all people”\, to reflect a diversity of gender identities. (Further background is here.)
