SUMMARY:Peace Team Training
DESCRIPTION:More and more\, communities are facing hostility\, harassment\, and threats to their safety — and a lot of us want to show up for the people and places we love but aren’t sure how. The wanting is there. It’s the how that’s missing. \nThis training is the how. Over two evening sessions online and an optional full day in person in Calgary\, you’ll learn practical skills in nonviolent action\, de-escalation\, and community-led safety – taught by Nonviolent Peaceforce\, who have spent more than 20 years keeping people safe in some of the most dangerous places on earth\, from Ukraine to South Sudan. \nYou’ll leave with real skills\, the confidence to use them\, and everything you need to start a peace team of your own – through your church\, your organization\, or your community. \nWhether you’re showing up for queer and trans communities\, standing with immigrant and refugee neighbours\, organizing for a ceasefire\, or helping keep any gathering safe under pressure\, the tools are the same. If you’ve ever wanted to be a steadying presence when tensions rise\, this is where you learn how. \nHOW IT WORKS \nThe program runs in two parts. The two online sessions are required for everyone. The in-person day is optional — and because it builds directly on the online trainings\, completing both online sessions is required before attending in person. As such\, registration for all sessions closes Sept. 9th. The online session recording will be available to registrants for two weeks after the session to catch up before Oct. 3. \nYou’re welcome to take the online sessions only; many people will. \nFor the full schedule and to buy tickets\, go to: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/peace-team-training-registration-1991244502911

SUMMARY:Spill The T: Readings from the 2SLGBTQIA Human Library
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the September offering of Spill The T – “Sports: Beyond the Birth Certificate”. Robertson-Wesley United Church will be hosting guests Jasper Whitby with Edmonton Quadball\, and Allison Hadley\, to speak about their experiences as athletes who also happen to identify as trans*. Anyone who is curious about how a trans person might experience playing on a team or sports generally – especially considering the recent legislation targeting women and girls – is welcome to bring their questions and listen to stories from our human library books. \nAs with all Spill The T events\, this is\nall ages and all identities friendly\,\nfree to attend;\nASL interpretation will be provided\, and\nthe building is accessible with bathrooms and a lift for mobility needs. \nHow does Spill The T work?\nEvery month the evening begins with water\, coffee or tea as guests arrive\, explore resource tables and find their seats. Doors open at 6pm and the program officially starts around 6:30 with an introduction from our directors at Kirk and Robertson-Wesley\, as well as the emcee and presenters. Story sharing begins the discussion\, hearing each presenter tell a little about their life before answering questions from the emcee and audience. Once audience questions have been exhausted\, snacks and refreshments will be available as everyone moves into small table conversation on more nuanced topical prompts with the presenters and additional table hosts. After an invitation to switch tables\, the evening wraps around 8:30pm and everyone hopefully leaves with more understanding and awareness\, able to share their experience with their own circles and community. \n**Spill The T is made possible with funding from the City of Edmonton’s Beyond Belonging Grant Program and the Edmonton Community Foundation. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an open and respectful conversation about transgender in sports. The first half of the event will be a presentation by speakers for the event topic. The second half of the event is the Human Library portion where you can get a more personal connection with the presenters and topic. Here is a more detailed breakdown of what a Spill the T event looks like: \n6:00pm – Doors Open \n6:30pm – Presentations Begin! The first half of this event will be a guided presentation – or more of an interview – by an MC and the Presenters. \n7:30pm – Snack Break! \n7:40pm – The Human Library Portion \nThis is your time to explore and connect with the presenters! The presenters who spoke before\, as well as a few new speakers\, will be at the tables. Pick the table with the topic you are most curious about and start up a conversation!
