SUMMARY:Hiding in Plain Sight: The Impact of Immigration intercultural conversation and coffee
DESCRIPTION:Join Chris Pullenayegem and members of the Western Intercultural Ministries Network as we continue our multi-year tradition of hosting deep and sometimes difficult conversations on pressing intercultural issues. Immigration is a complex and sometimes hot topic in our churches and our society. Come out in person or online and join the conversation! Bring your questions and dilemmas\, your respectful curiosity\, and your hopes for an intercultural church Coffee and fellowship after. \nFriday October 20\, 6:30 PM\, in person at Grace United Church\, 6215 104 Ave NW\, Edmonton\, AB T6A 0X9\nAnd live streamed on the Grace United YouTube channel. \nAbout our speaker and conversation facilitator:\nChris Pullenayegem is an immigrant from Sri Lanka specialized in law (specializing in refugee and Immigration law and policy)\, psychology\, leading change and innovation and in adult education. Chris grew up in a multi-religious and multi-ethic context among communities fractured along these lines. In Canada he worked as a Refugee Policy Analyst which adds to the wealth of knowledge and experience he brings to the area of migration and Diaspora. \nHis current work as Director of Congregational Vitality at the Vancouver School of Theology includes building a vision for a new and emerging church in Canada co-created by established and migrant communities of faith\, which involves researching and developing resources to facilitate this evolution.  His interest in inter-faith work motivated him to lead an Ontario inter-faith coalition on social reform for a while.  He is a trainer in cross-cultural competencies and multi-faith awareness and is a keen observer of people movements. Chris has decades of experience working with the Church in matters relating to church renewal\, leadership and new ministry development and discipleship/faith formation.

SUMMARY:CCS Friday: Creating Harmonious Space
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, February 23 from 12:00 to 1:00 CST join an online conversation about creating “harmonious space” rather than “safe space”. Harmonious space is the condition in which diversity and inclusion truly grow. Guided by author and educator bell hooks\, who said\, “ Learning takes place in harmonious space” and “Community that allows for risk\, the risk of knowing someone outside your own boundaries is love.” We will consider harmony and risk as opposed to “safety” as the best environment suitable for diversity. \nOur special guest will be Deaconess Adrainne Gray. Adrainne was consecrated a Lutheran Diaconal Association (LDA) deaconess and ordained an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) deacon in 2017. She is currently the Director for Recruitment for the LDA with a focus on Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion and works remotely from her home in Atlanta\, GA. \nCCS Fridays are free. Please register to receive a zoom link:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0kcOCoqz8tGtf4EgB269gUXM_d-r_sSrqc#/registration \nCCS Fridays are online conversations to help us respond faithfully to emerging issues in local contexts. These workshops are open to anyone who might be interested. There will be a presentation that will be recorded for future viewing\, plus opportunities to engage with the ideas in small groups.

SUMMARY:Learning gathering on unmarked burials
DESCRIPTION:Our Sacred Responsibilities: learning from the Unmarked Burials report and challenging settler denial. \nAll people of all backgrounds welcome to this day-long learning gathering\, open to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. We will focus somewhat on the United Church’s responsibilities\, but all backgrounds are welcome as a full part of the day\, and we will not focus only on the United Church. \nTogether we will learn about the recent report on unmarked burials; explore what reparations means; learn about the problem of settler denialism; and practice together how to challenge it. Speakers and knowledge keepers will help us\, and all who come are full participants in helping each other and our communities create a good path forward. \nCommunity\, prayer\, ceremony\, and cultural supports will be part of our day. A separate support space is also available to First Nations\, Métis and Inuit\, respecting that this is a hard topic. \nPractical details\nPlease click here to register. Registration is free but required\, so we can plan for meals.  \nThe full reports from the Office of the Special Interlocutor on Unmarked Burials are available here. (They’re long\, which is one of the reasons we’re offering this learning space.) \nClick here for a PDF poster to share with your community. You can also use the image at the top of this page. \nResource people: elder Wilson Bearhead (invited); elder Dennis Paul;  knowledge keepers Rev John Snow and Rev Tony Snow; Sara Stratton\, Reconciliation and Justice Animator at the General Council of the United Church. \nPlan for our day: 9:30 gathering and coffee; program begins at 10:00AM; we will finish no later than 4:00PM. Our day will include (among other things): prayer and ceremony; an overview of key parts of the report on unmarked burials; reflection from a survivor; what do we and the report mean by “reparations”; what is settler denial\, and how can we challenge it? \nOur space: The building is fully accessible\, and we will be using mics to assist those with hearing needs. We will be in a space where Christian symbols are minimal\, and where smudging and medicines will be part of our day. There is parking on site\, and transit a block away. Lunch and snacks included. \nTravel costs for First Nations\, Métis\, and Inuk participants will be covered. \nOrganized by Indigenous Ministries and Justice of the United Church; Northern Spirit Regional Council: The United Church of Canada; and the Edmonton Cluster of the Being Good Relations Network. Thank you to Spiritual Seekers United in Community/ Southminster-Steinhauer United Church for hosting.

SUMMARY:From the Heart: understanding the impacts of AB's anti-transgender laws
DESCRIPTION:This event is now done\, and the video is available here. \nJoin us for personal stories of the impacts of Bills 26\, 28\, and 29 on Albertan athletes\, teachers\, parents\, children\, and church members. Learn together how we can take action in support of gender-diverse people. Please save and share the image above\, and use freely. Here’s the scheduled YouTube link. \nIn 2024 Alberta passed the legislation needed to put in place major medical and athletic restrictions on transgender people\, and restrictions on sexual health education and gender expression in the school system. The result: the most restrictive laws in Canada. The legislation is facing legal and Charter challenges\, and has met with fierce resistance from gender-diverse people and allies\, as well as strong criticism from a range of professional associations. \nBehind the headlines and debates\, what is happening for transgender people in Alberta? This isn’t only a legal and legislative matter; it has lived impacts on people’s bodies\, minds\, hearts\, and spirit. We thank our speakers\, who are joining us to speak about the impact on their lives. We invite you to come with an open mind and heart\, and hear their stories\, no matter your opinion on this legislation. SUMMARY:God-Talks from Diasporic Filipino Ministers in the UCC
DESCRIPTION:Our lunch time Intercultural Coffee Chai series resumes! \nThursday\, Sept 25\, 2025\, 12:30pm MDT and CST/1:30pm CDT (90 minutes). \nIntercultural Stories and Narratives: God-Talks from Diasporic Filipino Ministers in the United Church of Canada \nBring your lunch and join us as we resume the Western Intercultural Ministries Network 100th Anniversary series honouring ethno-cultural communities within the United Church. \nThe Filipino Ministers Network in The United Church of Canada invites you to join them for a panel discussion about seeking God in the midst of every-day life. In the Philippines\, theologizing is embodied in everyday life; not seen as a separate religious category or exercise. Faith grows out of our lived experience: life-stories\, turning points\, crises and celebrations. God is active in shaping our everyday decision-making. \nWe’ve invited three Filipino ministers to reflect on their own faith-journeys\, and describe how they have come to talk about God differently with each other\, and with the congregations they lead. They’ll talk about how being immigrants to Canada has shaped their understanding of God\, and how theologies emerging in the Philippines can enrich their life and work within the Canadian church and culture. \nJoin us to broaden your theological imagination! \nZoom info:\nhttps://united-church.zoom.us/j/81253431672?pwd=Bg3Wb0bPR1IvIn48wLLyZLw2GPL6Yi.1 \nMeeting ID: 812 5343 1672        Password: 231524 \nPhone as needed: 855 703 8985 Canada Toll-free \nPanelists\, Topics\, and Bios\n\n\nRev.
