SUMMARY:A CIRCLE reading and DISCUSSION of the United Nations Declaration of Right of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP)
DESCRIPTION:UNDRIP is an international human rights instrument that affirms the minimum standards for the self-determination\, dignity\, and well-being of Indigenous peoples throughout the world. The Declaration came into being in 2007 after more than 20 years of collaboration among Indigenous peoples and states. 143 Nations signed on in 2007.\nCanada signed on in December 2010\, and endorsed the UN Declaration. On June 21\, 2021\, Bill C-15\, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act received Royal Assent and became law. The Act provides a road map for the Government of Canada to work in consultation and cooperation with First Nations\, Inuit and the Métis Nation on the development of an action plan\, including measures to ensure federal laws are consistent with the Declaration.\nWe will be reviewing and discussing why this document is important in the work of truth and reconciliation.
